What is CBAM?

CBAM is the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. It requires every EU importer to report the carbon embedded in the goods they bring into the European Union, and to surrender certificates against those emissions. The definitive phase has been live since 1 January 2026.

Do I have to file anything myself?

No. As a non-EU exporter, you don’t file anything with the EU yourself. Your EU customer is the one who submits the declaration to the EU Registry. Your job is to hand them the emissions data in the exact format the regulation requires.

What format does the EU require?

The EU accepts CBAM emissions data in a single official XML format. The schema is updated regularly, and any file that doesn’t match it exactly gets rejected. Our specialists prepare that file for you and keep it current with every schema change.

What happens if my data is wrong?

Your customer can’t complete their declaration, so they’ll send the file back to you. While you fix it, your shipment sits waiting for clearance. We run a series of structural and content checks before any file leaves us, which is how we make sure that doesn’t happen.

Which of my products are covered?

CBAM covers six industries: iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen. The regulation lists the exact CN codes inside each. If you sell goods under those codes into the EU, your customer needs your emissions data.
